Reader Weekend in RI Highlights—Perfect Weather and a Great Time Had by All!
The weather gods came through once again with a “perfect ten” for Marie’s Third Annual Reader Weekend in Rhode Island, where more than 240 people attended various weekend events, including the Tiki Bar reception and dinner Friday, the trip to Block Island Saturday and the book signing/Q&A Sunday.
Twenty-nine states and three countries—the U.S., Australia and Canada—were represented in weekend attendance. More than 30 people who came to this year’s event attended in 2015. Five people have attended the Reader Weekend events all three years.
Attendees also included the following contest readers: Pam Van Sickle (Love After Dark), Kelli Farrand (Fatal Frenzy) and Kara Petrovic (It’s Only Love).
This year Marie’s husband, Dan, supplied four of his paintings based on the Green Mountain series. The paintings were offered during a silent auction, raising $825 for Lucy’s Hearth, an organization that serves homeless mothers and their children. Marie’s cousin, Jennifer Barrera, is program director. During the weekend, an additional $243 was donated to Lucy’s from other attendees, making the grand total donated $1,068.
The highest bidder at the auction was Newport native and longtime friend of Marie’s family, Jack and Pam Grant, who bought the Abbott’s Barn painting. Kathryn Johnston bought the Guthrie House painting. Bob Cupp, father of Julie Cupp, COO and executive assistant to Marie, bought the Green Mountain Country Store painting, and Pat Coussa bought Will’s cabin painting. We will be having prints made of the paintings that will be available for sale in Marie’s store in the next few weeks.
“We had such a great time at Reader Weekend 16,” Marie said. “I couldn’t believe how many readers came from near and far to join us. I give huge props to Julie and the rest of my team for pulling off another seamless event. Everything was great—especially the enthusiastic readers who were so excited to come to my home state to see the places I write about.”
